Vicarious Trauma and Burnout in Helping Professionals:

How to build a trauma informed and sustainable self care practice

2.0 CE Credits for LMFT, LEP, LCSW, and LPC in California

Kelsey Harper, Psy.D. CAMFT CE Provider Number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Helping professionals have high rates of burnout that impact the care they provide and their quality of life.  As professionals who bear very close witness to the wide ranging effects of traumatic experiences of their clients, their clients’ families and communities, risk of developing symptoms and traits of vicarious trauma is high.  When left unaddressed, these symptoms compounded with systemic and cultural factors that contribute to burnout lead to diminished quality of care, and diminished quality of life for professionals, often leading to professionals abandoning their role altogether. In this training, participants will learn about risk factors in developing vicarious trauma, identifying symptoms and characteristics of vicarious traumatization and burnout, how to build sustainable self care practices and establish community based coexistence, and implement a practical self care plan immediately following training. Participants will learn through a variety of instructional methods including practice, small group discussion, and in vivo demonstration.

WHEN/WHERE: Upcoming/TBD, join mailing list for announcements

You will learn:

  • how to assess and identify early indicators of developing vicarious traumatization

  • symptoms of burnout in themselves and colleagues

  • skills to intervene when vicarious trauma appears

  • skills to prevent accumulation of burnout factors and vicarious trauma symptoms

  • skills to establish systems of care for the specific needs of helping professionals

You will leave training with an established plan for individual, community, and systems approaches for burnout prevention.

Target Audience:

Helping professionals including (but is not at all limited to) therapists, counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, emergency first responders, EMTs, firefighters, life coaches, spiritual leaders, teachers, veterinarians, vet techs, animal rescue workers, healthcare technicians, caregivers, lawyers, students in school to become a helping professional, interns, administrative and support staff, and anyone I have not mentioned providing care support.
